Michiel is very experienced in teaching children of all ages. In his interactive classes he talks about music, geography, history, biology and people. Of course the main part of the workshop is about how to play the didgeridoo!
Workshops start at the 7th grade and up. At primary school the main focus will be on playing.
There are different possibilities: Michiel can give an introductionary workshop for about an hour to an hour and a half. Or a full workshop of 3 to 4 times 1 hour.
Michiel's experience is that out of a group of 30 children 99% will master the circular breathing. Every workshop will conclude with a mini-concert!
In workshops for highschools a substantial part will discuss the origin of the didgeridoo.

Weekly classes
Since 2001 Michiel has been teaching at percussion school Mi Dushi on Wednesdays. The lessons are divided into three levels.
Some of his students have been studying with him for over 16 years!

Workshops
Over the past years, Michiel has been giving workshops all over Europe. Michiel is known for his relaxed way of teaching and always gets everybody going with his humor and clear teaching methods.
In a 3 hour beginners workshop, Michiel will get straight to the point. Circular Breathing. He will explain this in a few minutes and then it is time for practise. It's Michiel's experience that almost everybody will master this technique. We also start working on our first rhythms.
In a 3 hour advanced workshop Michiel will start with listening to all the participants. At that time he will come up with a workshop that caters everybody's needs. With his 20 years of experience and study of sounds and rhythm he will be able to make it interesting even for the most advanced players.
In this, 3 hour, Yolŋu-style workshop we will learn the many individual sounds which you can integrate into your own version of Yolŋu style of playing. During the last part of the workshop we will learn some basic practice phrases so you can get an idea on how complex your music can get if you learn and practice the individual sounds.
Note: Michiel will not teach traditional songs from North East Arnhemland.
Part of the profits from this workshop will be used to support Yolŋu yidaki crafters and their work.

Sleep apnea & snorring

Michiel is no therapist but a didgeridoo teacher. The grounds that a lot of didgeridoo teachers who use to promote their practice as a healer are not really scientific. The researcher only used a group of 14 people....
However! Didgeridoo playing is healthy!
So Michiel wil treat apneapatients and people who have problems with snorring like he treats al his students. He will teach you how to play the didgeridoo!!!
If you notice any improvement with your snorring or apnea... Good for you! It’s a bonus!
Museum Volkenkunde Leiden
After working for years with the Aboriginal Museum Utrecht, Michiel now is working with Museum Volkenkunde in Leiden.
