MT-Yidaki Shop

Yiḏaki and mago are the original didgeridoo’s played by aboriginal people in the northern part of the Northern Territory, mainly in Arnhemland. These very diverse groups of people have these instruments in their culture since many generations.

Michiel's aim is to bring you high quality yiḏaki and mago of the highest cultural integrity. All the instruments are hand selected and made by traditional people on traditional land.

Since 2011 Michiel decided to re-invest a part of his annual proceedings as a didgeridoo player/teacher back in to Arnhem land culture. Which led to a shop full of instruments selected for their playability.

If you are looking for something particular feel free to drop a line and he will do his best to source it for you!

And this is a typical Ŋoŋu Ganambarr yiḏaki. A stable, slightly dry instrument with easy toot. The drone is very stable and direct. If you would oil it, it will be a little less dry, but personally I do like that dry sound.
The painting is special!
This yiḏaki is significant, not only as a musical instrument, but also because it is painted with Daṯiwuy clan miny’tji, a sacred design that belongs to his clan. The design denotes ‘ganu’ the muddied water stirred by the currents and tides that are made by the ancestral shark ‘mana’ thrashing its tail.

100% cultural authenticity and a pretty amazing yiḏaki!

It is painted with Wititj’ the ancestral rainbow serpent and Djarri the rainbow coming out of his mouth. In North East Arnhemland there are a few different type of yiḏaki. Of course it is not a coincidence that one seems to be a lot bigger than the other. Different clan’s use different instruments depending on which ceremony is going to be held. I have heard Djalu decide to go out and make a specific instrument and then go out to a bit of forest just around the corner. Not a yiḏaki but worth listing on this part of the website since it has been used and praised for its playing characteristics by Djalu Gurruwiwi and M*lk*yŋ* Munuŋgurr amongst others. It is generally accepted that the difference between a didgeridoo and a yiḏaki is determent by its origin. It does not say anything about quality. Didgeridoo is the term for any ‘didgeridoo-like’ instrument where yiḏaki should only be used for an instrument that is been cut by Yolŋu, on Yolŋu land.

I bought this stick in 1998 and it has been my main stick ever since. I took it with me to Togo (Africa), Russia and almost all of Europe. When I took it with me to North East Arnhemland, both Djalu and M*lk*yŋ* used it during the intense Buŋgul sessions at night. Djalu even borrowed it for 2 weeks after the Garma and was reluctant to give it back. It has also been played on stage by contemporary didgeridoo players like Mark Atkins, Si Mullumby and Markus Meurer. Millions of people saw and heard the sound of this instrument since it has been on television in the Netherlands, Australia and Togo.

When cut and made in 2009 Djalu told me that the sound of this particular instrument represents the thunder or Baywarra. He also told me that this instrument should be referred to as a Djuŋgirriny’ .
Djuŋgirriny’  is one of the yiḏaki of which Djalu is the custodian. The story of this instrument took place on a Galpu beach and the painting, by Djalu, on this yidaki represents the different waters that occur in that area. It is generally accepted that the Galpu own the creation story for the Dhuwa yiḏaki, Djuŋgirriny’. This is also the type of instrument that Djalu can play with healing intend.

After intense research by myself with help from the Buku Larrngay staff, I am pretty sure it is made by Narritjin Maymuru. Narritjin had an important role in the Yirrkala Church panels and the Bark petition. This instrument has very fine rarrk and plays like an old school Djalu Gurruwiwi yiḏaki. After intense research by myself with help from the Buku Larrŋay staff, I am pretty sure it is made by Narritjin Maymuru. Who, at that time was running a small shop on the beach and started the foundation of what now is the price winning and international acclaimed Yirrkala Art Centre. Interesting is the painting of the fish that intertwine with the water lily leaves, in a M. C. Escher style.
It is in uncracked condition and still plays very well. Although it is very dry and some water or oil would really make it come alive. The sound reminds of the old Wandjuk Marika at Ports Moresby recordings.

The dotted style of painting is about the creation story of the Wagilak sisters and the Rainbow serpent. Traditionally mago are classified as coming from an overtone absent area. But as with all cultures things are not static and in the Northern parts of Arnhemland things tend to blend and some early field recordings from that area do have songs where the first trumpet is used quit a lot.

The Galpu people don’t only have the really big and thunderous yiḏaki but also play more high pitched instruments like this one. And this applies to most other clans. It is depending of its use and of the preference by the songman which key (yiḏaki) would be used. It can depend on clan, context and many others reasons. It is not a rule like this clan plays a big one and that clan small ones. It is also not rule that Yirritja means small yiḏaki and Dhuwa means big yiḏaki. All things are part of a greater system and things are intertwine with each other. As a non Yolŋu person it takes many years to understand this and I have to be honest to say that I am nowhere near understanding.

This is what happens when everything comes together. Termites, tree, Yolŋu yiḏaki crafter #1 and a senior Dhudi-Djapu lady with a magic brush.

This is how this instrument was described on the Yirrkala Yidaki facebook page:
It has been painted with designs that represent Bawaŋ, a seasonal potato that grows wild in Arnhem land. Bawaŋ is an important food source and also represents a source of power, as it is the food eaten by Bolŋu, a powerful creation ancestor for the Dhuwa moiety.

Mulkun recently completed a significant collection of paintings that document and preserve her botanical knowledge of traditional Yolŋu plant usage. This collection has been purchased by art collectors and then donated to the National Museum of Australia as a permanent collection. A book will be produced from this collection, which will include both the Yolŋu and the botanical names for each plant species, plus the uses and identification resources for these plants. This represents the documentation of very important cultural knowledge, fulfilling the personal vision of Mulkun in her desire to renew the knowledge of these plants. When she was young this was the food that she grew up on. As she says in her own words “In those days the elders lived for a long time without illness.”

Besides the significant painting by Mulkun about the yiḏaki by one off the best yiḏaki craftsmen of nowadays I can say only 1 thing: It plays like that 1% top quality that old man Djalu makes!
A true collectors piece that plays like a dream!!!

Dhapa is not only one of the most cosistent yiḏaki crafters but he’s a real wood worker as well.
All of his yiḏaki are made with a lot of love for the shape of the tree and he spents hours in shaping it so that the walls are evenly thick.

I am forunate to say I spent quite a few days out bush with Bibibak. And I like his style of sticks! For my (contemporary) performances I mainly use other instruments but when I am talking trad. I often grab one of his sticks. In traditional Buŋgull the main purpose of the yiḏaki is to accompany the dancers. That means that it has to be bright and gritty so the dancers can easly hear the rythm that is played. Also the horntone needs to be bright since a lot of signals in Yolŋu song and dance are made trhough the sound of the yiḏaki. This particular instrument is very well suited for this job and if your aim is to study and understand Yolŋu music than this is a great instrument for you!

Dhaḏalal

A special type of ritual  yiḏaki for the Yirritja moiety. Nowadays it is a public instrument that has been brought out in the open at the Garma in 2004.
It’s use is to call for funeral ceremonie by blowing a series of long sustained trumpet notes.
A typical Dhaḏalal also has string with kangaroobones attached. But Balku Wunuŋumurra made this specific  instrument without. According to him it is still a Dhaḏalal yiḏaki though. He just decided to leave out the very powerfull and sacred parts…

The lorrikeet feathers however underline the sacredness of this yiḏaki.

It is very rare that an instrument like this is avaible on the commercial market.
Not an instrument to use on a rockstage but more for a private collector that appreciates cultural authenticity.

It plays like a typical yiḏaki. High backpressure. Overall good but a bit course accoustics and an easy to hit trumpet note!

The design is a private design.  A true collectors piece just for the painting by it self!
The yidaki, as you can imagine with these dimennsions, has a very big sound. Very open, clear and alot of bass. In my opinion it is not really suited for the traditional playing styles form Arnhemland but if you are looking for a contemporary, beat-box style instrument or one for the more meditative styles then this is the stick! And it comes with the highest cultural intergity! Yolŋu made on Yolŋu land!

This is not something that I have very often! A perfect  G.
What’s perfect about this yiḏaki is the combination between the well balanced acoustics, the perfect backpressure and the clear transition of the vocals. Most of the times instruments in G are pretty tight and therefor the vocals come through a bit compressed and make it ghard to get strong high vocals like you do on ‘ daw’.
To top that of the trumpet note is half a tone below the fundatmental wich makes it very easy to hit. You only have to think ‘ dup’ and there it is!
Latju yiḏaki for a manymak price!

Jeremy Cloake launched a crowdfunding campaign for B*rrŋ*p*rrŋ* Wunuŋmurra a highly respected yiḏaki craftsman and elder of the Dhalwaŋu clan.
At the moment he is being treated for leukemia and not capable of making instruments and providing care for his family. He needs to travel up and down to Darwin to get treatment and this is costing the family a lot of money.

So I was in Italy at the Didjin OZ festival in Forlimpopoli, talking on stage about B*rrŋ*p*rrŋ* Wunuŋmurra and the rough times he is going through. And out of the audience came a good old friend, Alessandro Pinnelli, who I met in Arnhemland a few years back. He was willing to help and donated this super sweet yiḏaki by Dhapa Ganambarr. I priced it at € 580,- but normaly instruments like this wil go at € 780 in my shop.

ALL THE MONEY WILL GO TO B*rrŋ*p*rrŋ* Wunuŋmurra!

It is a sweet instrument with good acoustics and a super nice trumpet.
Just a manymak mandapul!

If you don’t want or need this yiḏaki you can donate to the campaign directly through the following link: https://www.gofundme.com/leukemia-treatment-support

Now this is what i personally like! An instrument wich has been the personal favorite of Larrtjaŋa Gurruwiwi. The sand of the cermonial grounds is still in the bell of this yiḏaki! A very nice and open instrument with very clear acoustics but still enough bass. The vocal transition is easy and unlike most of the higher pitched instrument not to throaty. The first trumpet is quite high and clear but this is a characteristic wich is preferd in Yolŋu ceremony since most of the instrumental signals are made with the ‘ dup’.

There is e few reasons why I like Dhapa’s work: First of all, he put’s some much love and work in finnishing his instruments. 2nd he works very finnely and presice and he keeps working till he get’s the full potential of the raw material.
All these things come together in this stick!
Lightweight, balanced, powerfull, gorgeous, perfect sound characteristics and… and… and…

Big and thunderous! This a very well balanced Djalu yiḏaki, the kind of instrument that he is famous for.  When Djalu made this stick in 2001 he only had to take the bark off, the rest is all natural.
Perfect balance between drone and toot.
The acoutics tick all the boxes, great bass, clear mids and bright enough highs.
Also the back pressure is supurb.
The mouthpiece has a little wax on it, but I think if it would have stayed in my private collection I would take it off…
Considering it’s size it is a lightweight yiḏaki, easy to handle and to travel arround with.
Dhapirrk yiḏaki this one!

This is an unusually large instrument from Ngongu, typically he makes instruments of much smaller proportions. The internal bore is completely natural from the mouthpiece to the distal end. It plays with plenty of volume, excellent bass frequencies and excellent clarity, without being too bright. Overall it has a warm and rich acoustic quality that I love. The playing pressure is good and is best suited to higher pressure playing, but can also be played softly with ease. The transition to horn tone is easy, the horn tone being soft and smooth. Marrnyula Mununggurr has painted this yidaki. Marrnyula is a Djapu clan woman who has won art awards for her work that is similar to this. This yidaki was made as a unpainted instrument in 2003 and Jeremy commissioned Marrnyula to paint it with Djapu clan miny’tj, representing the freshwater river at Wandawuy, the Djapu clan’s ancestral home. This is another great piece for any collection.

She had numerous exebitions and her work is held in some major art collections.
There are only 2 yiḏaki that I know of that are painted with this Yiki design.
The design, in natural ochres, depicts the Macasan knifes.

Dhapa needs no further introduction in the international yiḏaki scene. His work is of a constant quality. This particular yiḏaki is no exception. Clear acoustics, a nice and round dup and a very fine and even finnish.

A well used instrument from the Dhalinybuy community. Completly covered in duct-tape. A practice that is used by Yolŋu to repair cracks and make sure that the instrument always plays when it is needed. This is what a genuine yiḏaki looks like.
The mouthpiece is a bit sharp but that actually helps with making a good seal when you push this yiḏaki to it’s limits. I have noticed that a lot of people that want to play trad. style from North-East Arnhemland look for instruments that are really easy to play. Therefor I carry a lot of instruments in my shop that suit both contemporary aswell as traditional players. But some yiḏaki require a bit of push, study and practice to get to the full potential of that particular instrument.

So this is one of those instruments that will help you to get to the real trad. flavour!

Enough to make 3 normal sized mouthpieces.
Just heat up the mouthpiece to about 25 / 35 C (place it on your heater on a bit of tinfoil or use a hairdryer).
Mold it in to a suitable sized ring. And firmly press it on to your didge!

Most yiḏaki do not need beeswax.
Mostly they are been played straight on the wood.

A great F, actualy the kind of F that I like personally. Easy to control. Stable and fast.
A good balance in all frequensies and a dup right on the octave.
The only reason that I did not price it higher is that the finnish on this yiḏaki is pretty rough. It has grinder marks mainly at the top part.
Djalu applied some black beeswax on the mouthpiece but I don’t think it needs it and personally I would take it of.
