This is the kind of instrument that you will love more and more as you immerse yourself in the traditional playing of the Yolŋu.
Good Sticky Tape yiḏaki are hard to come by. The reason for the tape is that the player(s) appreciate the instrument so much that they have continued to repair it.
And this instrument by Mirrkindi (son of Yali Munuŋggurr) certainly belongs to this category!
Very loud with a high back pressure. A clear and bright toot. And your vocals are beautifully projected.
It actually meets all the characteristics that a yiḏaki player looks for to accompany the dancers.
About a quarter of the way up the bell there is a hole. There is tape over this and therefore does not cause leakage.
You could close this with epoxy or something.
But I would not do this myself. Because it would lose the raw and authentic nature of this instrument.
This is how he came out of the community. And I would leave it that way.
Finally, a consideration: This instrument was used within the cultural and ritual context of Yolŋu manykay.
This means that it may have been used during circumcisions (Dhapi) and funeral ceremonies (Bapuru).
I personally would not stand on a stage with such an instrument.
