This is truly an instrument for the traditionalist!
Sometimes, there's talk of a division between Dhuwa and Yirritja instruments, with the yiḏaki of the Yirritja side of society supposedly being higher-pitched. Of course, it's all a bit more complex.
But this is the kind of instrument you hear, for example, on the 'Gurrumurru' CD by the Dhalwaŋu clan.
Instruments like this require constant pounding. Certainly not for the dreamy player. But if you do pound it, the reward is rich!
A big sound, rich in overtones, fast and stable. With a clear dup!
Jeremy Cloake wrote about the painting:
"The artwork symbolizes Yukuwa, also known as Ganguri, the yam (or metaphorical 'source of power') associated with the creation story of Ganbulapula and the sacred Dhaḏalal yiḏaki (Yirritja). Yukuwa is also a ceremony where sacred objects are sometimes exchanged in recognition of tribal law.'
